| Description |
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is pleased to announce a national competition to select as many as 70 outstanding early career scientists. This competition will enable HHMI to identify the nation's best biomedical scientists at a critical early stage of their faculty careers, and to provide them with flexible funding to develop scientific programs of exceptional merit. HHMI seeks scientists in all areas of basic biological and biomedical research, and in areas of chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering that are directly related to biology or medicine. This new program comes at a critical moment for the nation and the long-term health of its medical research infrastructure. This initiative responds to the very real challenges faced by promising early career-stage scientists in an era of constrained research funding. In today's environment, early career faculty find it difficult to establish and develop research programs. They often begin their first independent position with institutional start-up funds to support their research. However, they are soon under pressure to apply for federal research grants. Even if they are successful in obtaining funding the first time, getting a second grant or renewing a grant is difficult. |
||||
| Comments |
This competition is open to Institutions that have been invited by HHMI to participate. UNM has been invited to submit nominations. Please contact Sophia Garcia at 272-2677, HSC Office Of Research, for complete details of submitting a nomination. |

The National Science Foundation's Division of Materials Research announces its call for International Materials Institutes (IMI): toward an International Materials Research Network to enhance international collaboration between US researchers and educators and their worldwide counterparts. The objective of the IMI is to advance fundamental materials research by coordinating international research and education projects involving condensed matter and materials physics, solid state and materials chemistry; and the design, synthesis, characterization, and processing of materials to meet global and regional needs. A central aspect of an IMI is its potential impact on advancing materials research on an international scale and developing an internationally competitive generation of materials researchers, and this distinguishes an IMI from other materials research centers that NSF supports. |

| Description |
The National Science Foundation announces its Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program. The Traineeship program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce. This may be gained through programs within the institution, or through strongly integrated, collaborative research experiences and/or fieldwork at foreign institutions and sites. The graduate experience should contribute to the professional and personal development of the students and equip them to understand and integrate scientific, technical, business, social, ethical, and policy issues to confront the challenging problems of the future. The IGERT project may draw upon investigators from one or more academic departments within a single institution or from more than one institution. Please note: This solicitation includes a new track for one IGERT Resource Center for the purpose of sharing and collaboration both inside and outside the IGERT community as well as for dissemination of practices and results. This award is anticipated to be funded as a cooperative agreement. |
||||
| Comments |
This is a limited competition. IGERT Traineeships: limit of four (4) preliminary proposals that may be submitted by an institution either as a single institution or as a lead institution in a multi-institution preliminary proposal. (Full proposals will be by invitation only.) One may participate as PI or co-PI in only one proposal submission. That restriction applies to preliminary proposals as well as full proposals. A PI or co-PI on one proposal may serve as non-senior personnel on other proposals. IGERT awards may be renewed only once. Renewal proposals compete in the same pool as new proposals. IGERT Resource Center: limit of one (1) proposal per submitting institution/organization. |
