Title

Paul B. Beeson Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award in Aging (K23)

UNM Deadline

12/04/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

01/14/2010

Notes:

Description

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), working in part with funds contributed by the John A. Hartford Foundation (http://www.jhartfound.org/ and The American Federation for Aging Research (http://afar.org/), are pursuing this initiative to sustain and promote the research careers of clinically trained individuals who are pursuing research careers in aging. The numbers of physicians and other clinically trained individuals who are committing to and sustaining independent research careers in the biomedical sciences remain inadequate to address the opportunities for translational research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and groundbreaking basic research being generated by advances in genetics, biomedical engineering, and other life sciences. Within the field of aging research the small numbers of individuals receiving training in geriatrics, and the smaller numbers pursuing research on aging remain inadequate to address the burgeoning needs of the rapidly growing older population. These needs require a substantial investment in current and future faculty who will devote their careers to advancing knowledge of effective prevention and management of illness and disabilities, and to inspire successive generations to do the same.

Comments

This program invites requests for three to five years of support. The actual duration of the award will depend upon the number of years of prior research experience and the demonstrated need for additional mentored experience to achieve research independence. Applicants may seek up to $200,000 (direct costs) per year. NIMH is interested in supporting investigators who will pursue clinical or health services research in mental disorders of late life, especially studies aimed at hastening the translation of behavioral science and neuroscience advances into innovations in clinical care. More details can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AG-10-011.html. The due date for full proposals to the agency is January 14, 2010. This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to one proposal. Please submit your 3-page preproposal by noon on Friday December 4, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: Aging Research - your name. The pre-proposal should address the major points that will be included in the proposal narrative (proposed candidate, brief description of candidate’s career development and research plans, proposed mentor, and environmental and institutional commitment to the candidate), and should be accompanied by a draft budget overview and an abbreviated PI CV. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email (evanmil@unm.edu) or at 277-7452.

Title

Engineered Nanomaterials: Linking Physical and Chemical Properties to Biology (U19)

UNM Deadline

12/04/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

01/22/2010

Notes:

Description

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences invites applications that will (1) determine which physical or chemical characteristic of an engineered nanomaterial (ENM), or cluster of characteristics, is integral to ENM-molecular interactions in a cellular process or organ system and (2) relate these findings to potential health effects. NIEHS recognizes that three types of activities need to converge to accomplish this research agenda. The first activity should focus on a detailed understanding of how physical and chemical characteristics of ENMs influence their molecular interactions at the cellular level, while the second activity should determine how the physical and chemical characteristics critical to that interaction are associated with any observed physiological or pathobiological events. The third activity will capitalize on these multidisciplinary efforts through integration of biochemical, molecular, and physiological mechanisms to expand traditional hazard identification and health risk assessment. An extraordinary level of synergy, integration, and potential for advancement of ENM hazard identification and risk assessment is expected.

Comments

An applicant may request a project period of up to 5 years and a budget for direct costs up to $750,000 dollars per year. Each applicant will develop an overarching theme to address the potential health implications of ENMs and will craft an interdisciplinary research approach that incorporates a basic mechanistic understanding of ENM-biological interactions as dictated by the physical and chemical characteristic of ENMs. More details can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-ES-09-011.html. The due for full proposals to the agency is January 22, 2010. This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to one proposal. Please submit your 3-page preproposal by noon on Friday December 4, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: NIH NanoBio - your name. The pre-proposal should address the major points that will be included in the proposal narrative (brief proposed summaries of the following: project activities, overall impact, significance, innovativeness, project approach, and description of the project scientific environment), and should be accompanied by a draft budget overview and an abbreviated PI CV. Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering Supplements and Sites

UNM Deadline

10/19/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

11/16/2009

Notes:

Description

The RET program encourages the active participation of both in-service and pre-service (education majors who are still pursuing their degrees) K-12 teachers and community college faculty in ongoing NSF supported engineering research through supplements and sites. Encouraging active participation of teachers in NSF projects is an excellent way to reach broadly into the teacher talent pool of the U.S. so that they can teach engineering concepts to K-12 students to encourage and stimulate them to pursue engineering careers. There are two specific types of this award: RET Supplement. A request for funding of an RET supplement should be made under an existing NSF ENG award or within a proposal for a new or renewed NSF ENG award. The description of the RET activity must clearly articulate in some detail the form and nature of the prospective K-12 teacher and if desired community college faculty member's involvement in the Principal Investigator's ongoing or proposed research. RET Site. An RET Site project is an independent proposal, submitted at an annual deadline date, to provide groups of in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers and if desired, community college faculty with discovery-based learning experiences in engineering laboratories and facilities, which will then be incorporated into their classroom activities during the school year. An RET Site project may be conducted during the summer, academic year, or both, and must have a well-defined focus, with clearly articulated projects and activities for teachers or community college faculty.

Comments

This program invites applications for a one year RET Supplement proposal where maximum funding is $10,000 per teacher, or an up-to three-year RET Site proposal where maximum funding is $500,000. More details can be found at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07557/nsf07557.htm. The due date for proposals is November 16, 2009. This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to two proposals. Please submit your 3-page preproposal by noon on Monday October 19, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: RET-ENG - your name. Description

Betsy Till, Interim Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) distributed a notice on August 12, 2009 to UNM’s Development Officers regarding the upcoming grant cycle being held by the McCune Foundation. Please note the McCune Foundation's annual grant cycle is open from August 15, 2009 to September 30, 2009. The foundation funds projects in New Mexico in the areas of arts, economic development, education, environment, health, and social services. Grants for specific projects, operating expenses, and capital expenses are considered. As in previous years, the foundation will accept only one application per organization. In UNM's case that means only one application per department, not school, college or the university as a whole. The UNM Development Officers have been asked by UNM CFR to work with their department chairs and directors to ensure that they approve/advance only one application from their department for pre-award processing and submittal to McCune. Faculty and staff members should coordinate their efforts with their chair or director to determine whether their proposal will be the one chosen for submittal.

Comments

As part of the application process, you will need the Employer ID Number for the organization under which you are applying. For the university, this number is 85-6000-642. The McCune Foundation will not pay overhead or indirect costs to the university, so please do not include those costs in your budget. All budget information should be provided for the project and the department (do not include the university's overall budget). On the application, the 'Executive Director' is the chair or director and the 'Board President/Chair' is the Dean. You can find more information at the McCune Foundation website: http://www.nmmccune.org/ Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 277-7452. Thank you.

Awards to Support Research on the Biology of Aging in Invertebrates (R01)

UNM Deadline

08/31/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

10/30/2009

Notes:

Description

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The National Institutes of Health invites applications (R01) that propose the identification and development of new invertebrate models for pursuing biology of aging research. NIA has been given $2.0 million in funds to pursue this research. The anticipated number of NIA awards is 5 to 6.

Comments

This program invites applications for an up-to five-year project grant proposal. Applications may request up to, but not more than, $250,000 in direct costs. Applications should focus on the identification, development and characterization of new invertebrate models that have short life spans. Invertebrate models with tractable genetics and genome sequence available or in progress, negligible or induced senescence, and tissue regeneration in adults are of particular interest to NIA. Examples of invertebrate models of interest include, but are not limited to planaria, hydra, rotifers, and tunicates. These invertebrate models are currently not well developed for aging research. Within the scope of this FOA, invertebrate models other than those mentioned above currently used by the biomedical research community, but not yet fully developed or realized for aging research, will be considered responsive to this FOA. In particular, applications that focus on the characterization of these novel models for aging research utilizing molecular, genetic, cellular or physiological tools and approaches to identify genes involved in longevity, senescence and cellular pathways in tissue homeostasis during aging are encouraged. More details can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AG-10-004.html. The deadline date for full proposals is October 30, 2009. This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to one proposal. Please submit your 3-page preproposal by noon on Monday, August 31, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: NIH Invertebrates - your name. NICHD Population Research Infrastructure Program (PRIP) FY10 (R24)

UNM Deadline

08/31/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

11/24/2009

Notes:

Description

The Program for Population Research Infrastructure seeks to advance scientific knowledge in areas related to the mission of the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch. DBSB is one of three branches of the Center for Population Research of the NICHD. DBSB’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and populations by adding to knowledge about human population dynamics and their causes and consequences. DBSB supports demographic, behavioral, and social science research on fertility, families, population movement, health and mortality, HIV/AIDS, and population composition. Research on population diversity and change, studies of the consequences of population diversity and change for health and well-being, and research on the interrelationships among individual, family, group, community, and population processes are all central to this mission. To achieve these goals, DBSB fosters innovative and multi-disciplinary research by providing awards to individual investigators and research teams as well as supporting research training and infrastructure in the population sciences. DBSB defines 'population' as the aggregate collection of individuals in a defined geographic area and/or social or demographic group. Examples include the residents of New York City, married people in the United States, and African American children under age five. Aggregates defined by their participation in a study, program, or service are not considered populations under this definition.

Comments

This program invites applications for an up-to five-year project proposal. This FOA allows for two types of applications: (1) Standard PRIP Applications, which request funding for Research Support Cores and/or Developmental Infrastructure Cores, and may also request funding for Public Infrastructure Cores; and (2) Public Infrastructure Only Applications, which request funding only for Public Infrastructure Core(s). More details can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HD-09-004.html. The deadline date for full proposals is November 24, 2009. This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to one proposal. Please submit your 3-page preproposal by noon on Monday August 31, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: NICHD Population Research - your name. Agency Deadline

10/01/2009

Notes: NEH allows an institution to nominate only two candidates.

Description

Please assist us by apprising your faculty that the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Summer Stipends has been announced. These stipends provide opportunities to pursue advanced work that will enhance the researchers’ capacities as interpreters of the humanities and enable them to make significant contributions to thought and knowledge in the humanities. Projects may contribute to scholarly knowledge, to the advancement of teaching, or to the general public’s understanding of the humanities. The Summer Stipends Program provides scholars with $6,000 to devote two consecutive and uninterrupted months of full-time independent study and research. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for holding tenure at other times of the year. U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. Foreign nationals who have been living in the U.S. or its jurisdictions for at least three years prior to the application deadline are also eligible. Persons who have held a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent within the last three academic years are ineligible for NEH Summer Stipends. A major fellowship or research grant is a postdoctoral research award that provides a stipend of at least $15,000. Sabbaticals and grants from a person’s own institution are not considered major fellowships, or are stipends and grants from other sources supporting study and research during the summer. Summer stipend recipients must wait five years before they are eligible to apply again to the program.

Comments

This is a limited competition. An institution cannot nominate more than two applicants. Branch campuses may nominate independent of the UNM Main campus process, but are also restricted to two applicants per institution. Branch campuses’ applications should be processed directly through the Office of Sponsored Projects Services, UNM Business Center, 1700 Lomas, NE, Suite 2200. Pre-applications should contain the following information: nominee’s CV, names of references, and description of work, which clearly conveys the ideas, objectives, and methods of the project (no more than 3 pages). NSF MRI - Major Research Instrumentation

UNM Deadline

06/15/2009

Notes:

Agency Deadline

08/10/2009

Notes: This competition is being funded by Recovery Act of 2009.

Description

The National Science Foundation announces the availability of its Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program, which serves to increase access to scientific and engineering equipment for research and research training. This program seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering by providing instrumentation for research-intensive learning environments that fosters the integration of research and education. The MRI Program assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation by institutions, that is, in general too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. Proposals must be for either acquisition or development. Instruments are expected to be operational for regular research use by the end of the award period. The MRI program now accepts proposal requests over $2M in NSF support (to the maximum request of $4M) for the acquisition of a single instrument. For proposals requesting $2M or less, investigators may seek support for instrument development or for acquisition of a single instrument, a large system of instruments, or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research tools.

Comments

This is a limited competition. Eligible organizations may submit a maximum of three (3) proposals, independent of the number of proposals that may have been submitted under the NSF 09-502 MRI competition. However, proposals that wholly or substantially duplicate those that were accepted for review under NSF 09-502 will not be accepted for this competition. A maximum of two submissions can be for instrument acquisition. If three proposals are submitted, at least one submission must be for instrument development. Please submit your 3-page Preproposal no later than noon on Monday June 15, 2009 to limited@unm.edu. Subject line should read either: NSF MRI-R – acquisition – your name or NSF MRI-R – development – your name. The narrative must include an overview of the proposed project, its goals and objectives, and innovative aspects of the project. Priority for selection will be given to preproposals that provide evidence that (1) this instrument will be broadly shared, servicing multiple educational scientific users, and (2) that there is a written commitment for cost sharing. Applicants must use the standard cost sharing process whereby agreement is secured from the department chair and dean, and arranged with the OVPR. The OVPR contribution for the winning proposal will be up to 65% of the cost share amount. Include an abbreviated C.V. of the PI.

Agency Deadline

06/30/2009

Notes:

Description

The primary objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), is to increase the health disparities research workforce by stimulating and supporting dissertation research. Dissertation research involves a major investment of the doctoral student’s time, energy, and interest and its substance is often the basis for launching a research career. Lack of financial support during this phase of training can delay completion of the dissertation project. The NCMHD Dissertation Research grant will provide full-time salary support and modest research funds for up to two years for eligible students to facilitate completion of their doctoral research project and dissertation in a research area relevant to the NCMHD mission and research priorities. These awards are available to all qualified pre-doctoral students in accredited research doctoral programs in the United States (including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories or possessions). Eligible students must have the goal of becoming successful investigators in areas of biomedical or behavioral science relevant to the mission of the NCMHD. This program invites applications for funding to support qualified pre-doctoral students to pursue research careers in any area relevant to the research mission of the NCMHD (i.e., minority health and health disparities research) and simultaneously increase the diversity of this workforce. More details can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-MD-09-008.html#SectionIII. The due date for optional Letters of Intent is May 29, 2009, and the deadline date for full proposals is June 30, 2009.

Comments

This is a limited competition; each institution is limited to one proposal. For the UNM preproposal cycle, each department may nominate only two pre-doctoral students. Eligible designated PD/PIs include students who demonstrate the following: · enrolled in an accredited research doctoral degree program in a biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research field; · in good-standing in that program; · completed all non-dissertation requirements for the doctoral degree by the anticipated start date of the award (except a clinical internship where that is required to follow the dissertation phase); · doctoral committee has approved the dissertation proposal; · from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who have been determined by the grantee institution to be underrepresented in biomedical or behavioral science; individuals with disabilities; or individuals from socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds that have inhibited their ability to pursue a career in health-related research; · U.S. citizen, non-citizen national (e.g., residents of U.S. territories), or permanent resident by the time of award. Please submit your 3-page pre-proposal, by noon on Monday June 15, 2009, to limited@unm.edu with the subject line indicating: NIH NCMHD R36 - your name. Each pre-proposal should address the major points that will be included in the proposal narrative (documentation regarding the student nominee’s qualifications, brief description of current dissertation research project being performed by the student and its relevance to the student’s long-term interests, description of faculty mentor supervisory relationship with the student nominee, utilization of novel theoretical concepts, methodologies, or instrumentation), and be accompanied by a draft budget overview, departmental nomination letter, a brief (up to 4 page) biosketch of the student’s faculty mentor, and a brief biosketch (up to 4 pages) of the student PD/PI. The faculty mentor for the PD/PI should be listed as the key person.

Description

The PFI program seeks to stimulate the transformation of knowledge created by the research and education enterprise into innovations that create new wealth, build strong local, regional and national economies and improve the national well being; broaden the participation of all types of academic institutions and all citizens in NSF activities to more fully meet the broad workforce needs of the national innovation enterprise; and catalyze or enhance enabling infrastructure necessary to foster and sustain innovation in the long-term. The Partnerships for Innovation program is intended to forge connections between new knowledge created in the discovery process and learning and innovation, while broadening the participation of people and institutions in NSF activities. We define innovation as the transformation of knowledge into the products, processes, systems, and services that fuel economic development, create wealth, and generate improvements in the national standard of living. proposals may include any one or a combination of the following activities: (1) research, technology transfer, and/or commercialization; (2) workforce education and/or training; and (3) establishing the infrastructure to accomplish or enable innovation. Proposals should show how all activities being proposed are related to innovation and increased capabilities for continued innovation as the ultimate outcomes. Innovation should be the proposed outcome, not the formation of partnerships. Proposals should also have a plan to ensure that the innovation can be sustained in the long term.

HHMI Early Career Scientist Competition

Notes: This is not a limited competition at this time. See HHMI Guidelines. Submission through UNM must be 5 working days prior to the HHMI deadline.

Agency Deadline

Notes: Researchers holding a faculty appointment at one of the more than 200 eligible institutions (includes UNM) may apply directly to HHMI in this competition, and institutional approval or endorsement is not part of the initial application.

Description

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is pleased to announce a national competition to select as many as 70 outstanding early career scientists. This competition will enable HHMI to identify the nation's best biomedical scientists at a critical early stage of their faculty careers, and to provide them with flexible funding to develop scientific programs of exceptional merit. HHMI seeks scientists in all areas of basic biological and biomedical research, and in areas of chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering that are directly related to biology or medicine. This new program comes at a critical moment for the nation and the long-term health of its medical research infrastructure. This initiative responds to the very real challenges faced by promising early career-stage scientists in an era of constrained research funding. In today's environment, early career faculty find it difficult to establish and develop research programs. They often begin their first independent position with institutional start-up funds to support their research. However, they are soon under pressure to apply for federal research grants. Even if they are successful in obtaining funding the first time, getting a second grant or renewing a grant is difficult.

Description

The National Science Foundation announces its Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program. The Traineeship program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce. This may be gained through programs within the institution, or through strongly integrated, collaborative research experiences and/or fieldwork at foreign institutions and sites. The graduate experience should contribute to the professional and personal development of the students and equip them to understand and integrate scientific, technical, business, social, ethical, and policy issues to confront the challenging problems of the future. The IGERT project may draw upon investigators from one or more academic departments within a single institution or from more than one institution. Please note: This solicitation includes a new track for one IGERT Resource Center for the purpose of sharing and collaboration both inside and outside the IGERT community as well as for dissemination of practices and results. This award is anticipated to be funded as a cooperative agreement.

The GSS is a personal interview survey that collects data on a wide range of topics: behavioral items such as group membership and voting; personal psychological evaluations, including measures of happiness, misanthropy, and life satisfaction; attitudinal questions on such public issues as abortion, crime and punishment, race relations, gender roles, and spending priorities; demographic characteristics of respondents and their parents. The basic GSS design is a repeated cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized adults who speak either English or Spanish. The GSS is a 90-minute in-person interview, with forty-five minutes devoted to the core items, 15 minutes to questions selected as part of the ISSP, and 30 minutes allocated to topical modules. The “core” consists of questions that regularly appear on the GSS, allowing long-term comparisons. The topical modules are used to introduce new topics not previously investigated by the GSS and to cover existing topics in greater detail.

Notes: Nominations; Proposals due January 23, 2008

Description

The Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award (DCSA) recognizes outstanding mid-career physician-scientists who are applying the latest scientific advances to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of disease, and enables them to support and mentor the next generation of physician-scientists conducting clinical research. The Medical Research Program created the Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award to enable mid-career physician-scientists to continue to bridge the gap between bench science and clinical research as well as help cultivate a new generation of physician-scientists to fill that role. DCSA competitions are typically held every other year. Since 1999, 34 awards totaling more than $55 million have been granted to mid-career physician-scientists. In 2006 the Medical Research Program also awarded three continuation grants of $200,000 each to support exceptional mentoring projects of past DCSA recipients.

Comments

Each U.S. accredited, degree-granting institution—which would encompass for that institution all affiliated graduate schools, related hospitals and research institutes—may nominate up to two candidates. Different divisions, departments, hospitals, centers, or schools of the same degree-granting institution should confer to submit one slate of nominees. We strongly encourage institutions to nominate women and under-represented minorities in medicine.

Description

The Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award provides grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to independent clinical research careers. The transition to an independent research career is often more difficult for physician-scientists conducting clinical research than it is for other researchers, as these individuals must balance both the demands of seeing patients with those of conducting research. The Medical Research Program created the Clinical Scientist Development Award to provide support to physician-scientists during this critical stage of career development. CSDA competitions are typically held every year. Since 1998, 125 awards totaling more than $54 million have been granted to junior physician-scientists.
