To: UNM Principal Investigators
Subject: Mandatory Grants Management General Workshop
In Fiscal Year 2002, the University of New Mexico received awards totaling $247 million in grants and contracts. We are now operating in a larger and more complex environment due to our increased success and an increasing amount of new rules, regulations, and agency oversight.
The University of New Mexico is committed to providing assistance to our faculty, researchers, and staff in addressing the increase in responsibilities of administration associated with sponsored projects (research, public service, and instruction). As an important step, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research has created a number of workshops focused on helping Principal Investigators manage sponsored projects.
The UNM Executive Cabinet instituted a requirement that all principal investigators and co-principal investigators attend the UNM Grants Management Program: General Workshop. Due to an ever growing myriad of rules and regulations, the University has found itself under increased scrutiny by funding agencies that has resulted in investigations, audits and disciplinary actions. The General Workshop's objective is to uniformly apprise all PIs and Co-PIs of the regulations, policies and procedures that pertain to the sound management of sponsored projects.
These workshops began in the Fall Semester 2002 and over 400 investigators have attended and been certified. We began this training process by targeting all those with new awards and/or renewals or supplements received between January and June 2002. We will offer the Spring 2003 Series at various locations throughout the University for all remaining PIs and Co-PIs who have not yet attended. This will provide you an opportunity to meet directly with representatives from the University's central offices concerned with sponsored project support and management.
Participation is required of all principal investigators and co-principal investigators. We look forward to working with you and providing you the information that will make management of your awards easier and safer. Registration instructions are below.
