Office of the Vice President for Research: PI Guide

TRANSFER OF SPONSORED PROJECTS

..............................................................................................

Contracts and grants administered by the University are legally awarded to the Regents of the University of New Mexico. In general, research grants usually transfer with a principal investigator, whereas, grants for public service or training projects usually remain at the institution, and a new PI is assigned. There are usually guidelines in the grant instructing the institution as to how to transfer the grant, or alternatively, to request the assignment of a new PI. If the circumstances of a sponsored project are changing, the Disposition of Sponsored Projects form is required in order for Pre-Award to make the appropriate institutional changes and address any requirements imposed by the sponsor. The form can be found at http://hsc.unm.edu/financialservices/preaward/forms.shtml. The Disposition of Sponsored Projects form will address the following situations: 1) the project is being transferred to a new institution, 2) the project is to remain at UNM with a new investigator; 3) the project will remain at UNM with a new school or department ; 4) the project will remain at UNM but will changes campuses. The Disposition of Sponsored Project form can also be utilized to record the equipment to be transferred. Signatures of both the UNM PIs and Department Chair are required. In the event the project is being transferred to a new department or campus, both the new and previous PI’s and Department Chair’s signatures are required.
