Purpose and Activities: The AT&T Foundation is the principal source of philanthropic activity by AT&T and its subsidiaries. It gives cash grants to nonprofit organizations for innovative programs that focus on helping people achieve self-sufficiency and lead productive lives. The scope of the foundation is global, although the majority of funds support U.S.-based institutions. In addition, AT&T maintains a local corporate contributions program to serve communities with a major AT&T presence. The foundation is interested in programs focusing on improving education, advanced community development, addressing vital community needs, enhancing unique cultural assets, and diversity in the community. Support for most local human services needs is directed through annual operating grants to the United Way or similar federated campaigns. Funds programs designed to increase access to technology, tools and resources, broaden technological training, professional skills development, reach / empower the disadvantaged or underserved communities in society.

Eligibility Requirements: Organizations must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Support for national organizations is emphasized. No grants are made to individuals or political or religious organizations; organizations that discriminate by race, color, creed, gender or national origin; sports teams, athletic competitions, banquets, goodwill advertising; endowments or memorials; or construction or renovation projects. Grants can be made to government instrumentalities.

Application Data: Send a letter of inquiry, no more than three pages, which should include: a clearly stated objective, long-range planning, active participation of governing board, and diversified support or strategies. Complete guidelines may be obtained by accessing their website.

Fiscal Information: Total grant expenditures in 2005:  $850K for arts and culture, $117,415K for civic and community service, and $1.35M for education. Average grant amounts range from $1K to $25K.
