Date Established: 1981.
Purpose and Activities: With more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches,
and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide the AAUW advocates
education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and
taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day: educational, social,
economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in our
public policy efforts, programs, Leadership and Training Institute, and diversity
initiatives. The foundation also offers Masters & Professional Awards
and Engineering Dissertation Awards to help end low participation of women.
The foundation also provides funding through the Community Action Grants program.
The Albuquerque Branch also offers a Research and Projects Endowment for grants
to communities or individuals to do research have an event or do research
for advancement of women.
Eligibility Requirements: In 1995 the Santa Fe AAUW established the
AAUW/UNM Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University
of New Mexico. Each year in April, a $2,000 scholarship
for tuition and books is awarded to a woman resident of Santa
Fe County who is enrolled as a full time graduate
student at any UNM campus, and who has demonstrated academic promise, achievement
and financial need. Requirements for Community Action grants are: US
citizen / permanent resident, endorsement / involvement of your local AAUW
branch or state branch, project is to promote education or equity for women
/ girls, and project activities have to take place within the US. Specific information for other programs can
