Date Established: 1948.
Purpose and Activities: Diseases of the heart are the No. 1 killer
in America, and stroke is the No. 3 killer. The American
Heart Association strongly believes that learning more about these diseases
is the best way to reduce disability and death. The Pacific Mountain Affiliate
supports research projects to be conducted in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. The
Affiliate offers funding for Pre-doctoral Fellowships, Post-doctoral Fellowships,
Beginning Grant-in-Aid, Grant-in-Aid; and a Fellow-to Faculty Transition Awards
is a National award sponsored in part by the Pacific Mountain Affiliate. Also
available are the National Scientist Endowment to promote the individual status
of an applicant and the National Established Investigator Award for mid-term
investigators with unusual promise or established record of accomplishments
in cardiovascular or cerebrovascular science.
Eligibility Requirements: Pre-Doctoral Fellowship: pre-doctoral Ph.D.,
M.D., D.O. students seeking research training with a sponsor/mentor prior
to embarking on a research career. Post-Doctoral Fellowship: recent M.D.,
Ph.D., D.O., or D.V.M. who agrees to devote at least 80 percent of full-time
equivalent effort to research. Beginning Grant-In-Aid: postdoctoral appointee,
instructor, assistant professor, or equivalent with a doctoral degree. Applicant
must demonstrate that the award will promote independent status. Grant-In-Aid:
faculty/staff members with doctoral degree pursuing independent research.

Deadline: Either July or January for written proposals electronic
submissions.
Fiscal Information: Beginning Grant-In-Aid amount is up to $60Kper
year for one year. Grant-in-Aid amount is up to $60K per year for two years.
Pre-Doctoral Fellowship amount is $20K and a stipend of $1K per month for
health benefits and project support of $3K per year for one to two years with
option to reapply for third year. Post-Doctoral Fellowship amount is $40K-
$48K per year and budget of up to $4K per year for one year.
