Purpose and Activities: Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation is a diversified company with operations in transportation and natural resources. The foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the territory these companies serve and in the communities where their employees live. With the exception of certain organizations and institutions that are national in scope, the foundation's giving is limited principally to communities in the midwestern, southwestern and western sectors of the United States. Currently, the foundation considers requests from a 28-state territory, which includes New Mexico.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or Section 170(c). Grants are made primarily in communities served by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation and its affiliates, including Santa Fe, Roswell and Albuquerque, NM. Grants are not made to individuals; political organizations; religious organizations for sectarian purposes; conferences, seminars, or workshops; testimonial dinners and similar benefit programs involving purchase of tables, tickets, or advertisements; endowment funds; computers or technology; films; and programs beyond the stated geographic areas of interest. The foundation prefers to fund specific programs, and rarely gives for operating support.

Application Data: Initial inquiries should be handled by mail. Do not phone or inquire in person. Send a letter of interest to the attention of Richard Russack, President, that includes a brief summary of the project and what kind of support is requested. If the foundation is interested in the project, an application will be sent to the requesting organization.

Deadline: Letters are accepted and reviewed continuously.
