Vote for Research Initiatives
The FY10 F&A budget has already been developed, and is available for viewing at research.unm.edu/budget. However, should F&A revenues exceed the $18.3M budgeted, then the balance will be split among deficit reduction and research spending. In the event that there are additional funds at the end of FY10, what initiatives would you like to see our office invest in?

Two points: (1) My preferences reflect concern that UNM has been on a downward ramp toward a community college model due to the increasing reliance on PTIs. Major deficiencies in faculty numbers in Chemistry, English, Anthropology and Math/Stats endanger most other programs indirectly. Resources need to be allocated to recruit and retain faculty. (2) I want to take this opportunity to reiterate a conversation I had with Mike Dougher regarding a 3-month long hiring debacle we suffered through to hire a project coordinator. With the check in hand from a foundation, we faced three months of resistance, first from Contracts and Grants and then from HR. So, 3 months into a 12 month project we are finally able to start the work. I hope that your office can help HR and C&G see how important it is to have a seamless hiring process for externally funded projects. The general practice is for clients to start the process and continue until someone throws a roadblock in the way, over and over. Rather, there should be a prescription to follow so that we can just follow the steps.
