foreword

One of the ways we recognize faculty at the University of New Mexico is through Faculty Publications and Creative Works. This publication highlights our faculty scholarly and creative activities and achievements while also serving as a compedium of UNM faculty efforts during 1996. Faculty Publications and Creative Works is an attempt to illustrate the depth and breadth of research activities performed throughout our University's laboratories, studios and classrooms.

We believe the communication of individual research is a significant method for sharing concepts and thoughts and ultimately promotes the birth of new ideas. In support of this, UNM faculty during calendar year 1996 produced over 2,541 works, including 2,079 scholarly papers and articles, 103 books, 73 book chapters, 115 reviews, 168 creative works and 3 patents. We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty which are reflected in part in Faculty Publications and Creative Works. This publication illustrates the diversity of intellectual pursuits in support of research and education at the University of New Mexico.

Nasir Ahmed, Ph.D.
Interim Associate Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies
