Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Training

Mandatory Training
Effective March 1, 2007, the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) requires that faculty, staff and students submitting either a new protocol, amendment or request for re-approval complete the appropriate social, behavioral and educational courses on the CITI web site. Certification must be secured prior to submitting protocols for review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). For ongoing protocols, CITI training must be completed prior to annual re-approval. CITI certificates are not required for a modification to an existing protocol unless a new investigator is being added or where no certificate was filed with the original application. The IRB reserves the right to request that an an investigator complete additional training modules before approving a protocol.

Who Must Take CITI Training?
CITI training is required of all faculty, staff and students who are engaged in the design, conduct or reporting of research at UNM that involves human subjects. All personnel listed as investigators on the protocol must submit CITI certification.

Training from Other Institutions
The ORC will accept CITI training taken at another institution. Proof of completion of CITI training must be provided at the time of protocol submission. To find out what other training will be accepted, please contact the ORC.

Renewal of CITI Certification
CITI training must be renewed every two years through a refresher set of modules available through the CITI web site.

About CITI
The CITI training is designed, updated, and maintained by a number of nationally known IRB professionals. Modules are housed at the University of Miami. For main campus IRB, the focus is on the social and behavioral modules. Topic specific modules are each followed by a short quiz. CITI training does not have to be completed in one sitting, it is available 24 hours a day all year round.
