Speaker Bios

Jessica Armijo, Accounting Manager, CGA

Jessica Armijo is an Accounting Manager for UNM’s Main Campus Contract and Grant Accounting Department. She received her BBA in Accounting at the University of New Mexico. After receiving her BBA she worked for a CPA firm for 2 ½ years conducting audits, preparing taxes and handling book- keeping for various agencies. She first began working in the Contract and Grant Accounting Office as an Accountant II in January of 2011, was promoted to an Accountant III in November of 2011, and was later promoted to a Supervisor of Fiscal Services in August 2014. She has over 12 ½ years of experience working with Contracts and Grants both at UNM and CNM.

Mohammad “Moe” Bundrage

Mohammad “Moe” Bundrage has been with Contract and Grant Accounting since August 2014. He started off as a Billing Accountant, became the Cash Accountant and then transitioned to a Fiscal Monitor Accountant 2 position within his first three years. Moe is now an Accountant 3. A product of his environment, Moe received his BBA in Accounting in 2010 from the Anderson School of Management, and then his MAcct in Information Assurance in 2019 from ASM as well. Moe prides himself with his resourcefulness when it comes to IT solutions and has been working with website development, coding and Microsoft products for several years as he constantly continues to look for ways to make things more efficient and contribute to the office and our research administration mission.

Michelle Casias, Proposals and Research Administration Systems Manager, OSP

Michelle is the Proposals, Awards & Electronic Research Administration Manager for the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP). Prior to joining the OSP team, she held leadership roles at the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED). She has also served as the Director of Operations and Executive Affairs with NMHE and worked as a Program Manager, proposing and overseeing a variety of grants through public and private entities, with research, academic and student support components. Michelle comes to OSP with extensive knowledge and experience in operations management, proposal preparation and processing, grant management, policy and procedure development, regulatory compliance, and contract negotiation and management. She has a Bachelor’s of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a concentration on Operations Management from the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico and is currently in the EMBA program.

Heather Edgar, Ph.D., D-ABFA, Professor of Anthropology, Forensic Anthropologist, Office of the Medical Investigator

Heather Edgar is Professor of Anthropology and forensic anthropologist at the Office of the Medical Investigator. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. She has led interdisciplinary tools to develop conduct anthropological research and to develop new research resources with broad applications.

Grace Faustino, IT Project Manager, OVPR

Grace Faustino is the IT Project Manager for the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) since 2012. Grace earned her Bachelors in Computer Science from NMSU and a Masters in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology from the University of New Mexico. As the IT Project Manager Ms. Faustino oversees internal and inter disciplinary IT projects for the OVPR as well being the Web Administrator and IT Support for the Office. Part of her duties include supporting the Research IT Strategic Initiatives for the OVPR.

Monica Fishel, Associate Director, Faculty Research Development Office

Monica Fishel has been with the University of New Mexico since 2000. For the past 21 years, she has specialized in supporting research development. She began her UNM career at the Center for High Technology Materials. After seven years, she took a position with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and is currently with the Faculty Research Development Office (FRDO). In her role as Associate Director, she works in close collaboration with other units of the OVPR and with research administration personnel in colleges, centers and departments to provide a broad range of services to faculty in support of obtaining extramural funding. She has a Bachelor’s of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a concentration on Operations Management from the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico.

Jason Galloway, Associate Controller, HSC CGA

Jason Galloway is the Associate Controller for University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Contract and Grant Accounting Office. He holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the University of New Mexico and is a Certified Public Accountant. He started with the University of New Mexico in 2014 and has over 19 years’ experience as an accounting professional. Jason and his team serve the Health Sciences Center for all post-award accounting and financial reporting requirements for sponsored projects related to contracts, grants, clinical trials, and sub-awards.

Jeff Gassaway, Information Security & Privacy Officer, Information Security & Privacy Office

Jeff Gassaway graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in English from the University of New Mexico, where he also earned his MBA. Jeff joined the University of New Mexico as a staff member in 1999 and has collaborated with stakeholders at Main, North, and Branch Campuses to advance principles of information security and privacy. Jeff has taken on leadership roles in information security and privacy initiatives at the local, state, and national levels, to bring value and opportunity to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of New Mexico, as well as to the diverse communities UNM serves. Most notable among these initiatives are UNM's effective and efficient credit card compliance program; New Mexico higher education information security working group; and New Mexico's premier computer forensics facility, the New Mexico Regional Computer Forensics Lab (NMRCFL). In addition to national presentations on information security and privacy, and guest lecturing on information security and privacy topics, Jeff holds numerous certifications in information security and privacy, including Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Jeremy Hamlin, Associate Controller, CGA

Jeremy Hamlin, Associate Controller in the Contract and Grant Accounting office, was born and raised in Albuquerque and is proud to call himself a native New Mexican. Jeremy is a product of the University of New Mexico having graduated from the Anderson School of Management with his BBA in December 2006 and his MBA in August 2020. Jeremy is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), licensed since November 2010. In January 2007, he began his career in public accounting working for a small local firm where he developed a niche in planning and performing governmental and single audits. After spending eight years in public accounting, Jeremy joined the Contract and Grant Accounting department in February 2015. He has been in research administration at UNM for six and a half years.

Teresa Hammitt, Fiscal Services Supervisor, CGA

Teresa Hammitt joined the University of New Mexico Main Campus Contract and Grant Department in March 2014 as an Accountant II. She has had various promotions within the department and is now an Accounting Manager for C&G. Prior to joining UNM as a staff member, Teresa worked for over twenty years in public and private accounting. She also has experience in financial analyses and process improvements. Teresa is an alumni of UNM having graduated summa cum laude from Anderson School of Management.

Mark Herrell, Accountant I, CGA

Mark has lived in New Mexico almost all of his life. He has been working at UNM for 21 years as staff and student. He spent the majority of those 21 years working at the University Libraries. He joined Contract and Grant Accounting in 2018. While working at UNM he received his BA in Math and his MACCT (Master’s in Accounting).

Andra Kiscaden, Sr. Business Manager, NM EPSCoR

Andra Kiscaden is the Senior Business Manager for NM EPSCoR, an NSF-funded program dedicated to expanding research capacity in the state of New Mexico. She has over 13 years of experience in departmental research administration at both main campus and the Health Science Center. Andra received a Master of Research Administration from the University of Central Florida in 2017 and is also a Certified Research Administrator.

Deborah Kuidis, Industrial Security Officer, Provost Office

Deborah Kuidis , Retired Deputy Chief from the Albuquerque Police Department and 5 years as a Commander with the University of New Mexico Police Department. Since 2008 has served as the Facility Security Officer (FSO) and Active Shooter Trainer at UNM. Recipient of two James S. Cogswell Awards and the Excellence in Counterintelligence Award from the Department of Defense.

Emily Luhman, Director of Faculty Relations, Office of Academic Personnel

Emily Luhman has served as Director of the Office for Academic Personnel (OAP) since July 2021. Prior to OAP, Emily has over 15 years of experience in human resources and higher education, including supporting the faculty at the University during her time with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Services.

Brianne Lucero, Sr. Sponsored Projects Specialist, OSP Awards

Brianne is a Sr. Sponsored Projects Specialist with the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP). She has been at UNM since 2009 serving in both student and staff roles. Brianne holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Criminology. She is the subaward point of contact at OSP and manages all new subawards issued by UNM.

Sue Marker, Compliance Specialist, Office of Research Integrity & Compliance

Sue Marker is a Compliance Specialist with the Ofc of Research & Compliance starting at UNM in November, 2016. Prior to that she was associated with California State University, Monterey Bay, working in the Masters of Social Work Program. She worked several years as a Compliance Examiner with the NE Workers’ Compensation Court.

Linda Mayo, Director, Office of the IRB

Linda Mayo, BA, CIP is the IRB Director at the University of New Mexico. She has been working in human research protections for over 18 years. She is a site visitor, team leader and Step 1 Reviewer for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protections Programs (AAHRPP) and in 2016 she co-founded Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R) SBER Network, a national collaborative of IRB professionals that focus on the unique issues and challenges of ethical oversight of Social Behavioral Educational Research. She has served on PRIM&R and AAHRPP conference planning committees and presented at national and international conferences. Linda was recently awarded the PRIM&R 2020 Arena Legacy award, honoring individuals who both embody and consistently foster professional leadership, education, and mentoring.

Bonnie Minkus-Holmes, PhD, Sr. Consultant, EOD

Bonnie is a senior consultant at EOD and has been with UNM for almost 3 years. She graduated with her PhD from UNM in LLSS in 2010. Originally from Chicago, Bonnie enjoys working with departments on change management, Effective Communication Methods, Leadership development as well as Coaching.

Nicolas Olson, Sr. Sponsored Projects Specialist, OSP

Nick is currently the Systems Coordinator and a Sponsored Projects Specialist for the Office of Sponsored Projects. He is a member of the Proposal Team and has extensive experience in reviewing and submitting proposals to private, federal, state, and local government sponsors. Through this experience Nick has gained operational knowledge of each sponsor’s unique portal, Cayuse SP and Cayuse 424. As the Systems Coordinator, Nick currently provides day-to-day system support to the UNM research community. Nick has been with the University since 2013. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 2012.

Isela Roeder, Faculty Research Support Officer, SOE Dean’s Office

Isela Roeder has been with the University of New Mexico since 1997 after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology. She has worked in various research areas throughout her nearly 24-year career. She has served as the Manager of Sponsored Projects and Senior Program Manager at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and at the Center on Alcohol, Substance use, And Addictions. She currently serves as the Faculty Research Support Officer for the School of Engineering, a role she has held since 2016 in which she assists SOE faculty, students, and staff in submitting proposals to federal and non-federal sponsors to support their research goals. In this role, she is also responsible for supporting large multidisciplinary funding proposals and supporting various departments and centers within the School of Engineering. Isela has dedicated her entire professional career to supporting UNM faculty to grow in their research endeavors and in supporting the education of their students.

Melissa Sanchez, Sr. Sponsored Projects Specialist, OSP Contracts

Melissa joined UNM in 2005 as a student employee at the UNM Children’s Campus. During this time she advanced to an administrative role as well as obtained her BA in Math Education, BS in Spanish, and MA in Secondary Education. She then worked in the College of Education as a Program Coordinator. With experience working on grant-funded programs as well as overseeing financial aspects in both former UNM positions, she now works as a Senior Sponsored Projects Specialist in the Office of Sponsored Projects. Melissa has experience with award setup, proposal submission, and contract negotiation.

James Seegers, Accountant III, CGA

James Seegers, Accountant III, has been with the Contract and Grant Accounting office since August 2019. James has a BBA in Accounting from Anderson School of Management and is currently studying for an MBA in Management Information Systems-Information System Assurance. James was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New Mexico, licensed in 2007 through 2011. After working in public accounting, he worked for LANL and SNL in various accounting and benefit plan administration roles from 2005-2018.  

Rebecca Valdez, Sr. Sponsored Projects Specialist, OSP

Rebecca joined UNM in 2012 and has experience in both, pre and post award functions at the University. She started at UNM as an Accountant in Contract and Grant Accounting, and is now a Sr. Sponsored Projects Officer in the Office of Sponsored Projects, managing the Award Team and Subaward Team. Prior to joining UNM, she worked in the private sector for 13 years where she gained private sector accounting experience in the government contracting field, as a fixed asset accountant, construction field, as a staff accountant, and as a staff accountant in a local CPA Firm. Rebecca holds a Bachelor’s Degree with concentration in Accounting from UNM and received her CRA certification in 2019.
