Research Collaboration

How to Get Started

Step 1: Connect with a UNM or Industry Research Collaborator

Step 2: Define Scope, Budget & Agreement Type(s)

Goal: Shape the collaboration by outlining the project scope, budget, and appropriate agreement(s).

  • Meet with potential partner to develop an initial partnership outline:
    • Define Scope of Work: Align on project goals, deliverables, and timelines
    • Estimate Budget: Build a realistic budget that supports the scope
    • Identify which Agreements may be needed: UNM offers several standard agreements to streamline the process. Find the list of available templates for use on the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) website.

You are welcome to invite someone from the Office of Research Translation, Innovation, and Partnerships (ORTIP) to join your meeting with the collaborator to help shape the scope, discuss agreement options, and ensure alignment with UNM policies.

  • Partner with FRDO for Industry-Sponsored Research (UNM Employees Only)

The Faculty Research Development Office (FRDO) helps UNM researchers craft competitive proposals for industry collaboration. Services include:

    • Strategic Proposal Support: Align proposals with sponsor priorities and showcase UNM’s strengths.
    • Internal Coordination: Streamline cross-unit collaboration and readiness for submission in coordination with OSP.
    • Facilitation & Partnerships: Build connections with industry and government, in coordination with ORTIP.
    • Early Engagement: Connect with FRDO early to boost proposal quality and funding success. Visit https://frdo.unm.edu and click "Request Research Support."
  • Meet with ORTIP to Review Your Partnership Outline

The Office of Research Translation, Innovation, and Partnerships (ORTIP) supports UNM researchers in planning successful industry collaborations. Services include:

    • Agreements & Contract Strategy: Receive guidance on agreement types and connect with appropriate offices.
    • Intellectual Property Considerations: Determine when to engage UNM Rainforest Innovations, complete invention disclosures, and avoid premature public sharing.
    • Collaboration Planning: Ensure alignment with UNM policies and streamline coordination with OSP.

You can contact ORTIP at any time for guidance and support as you navigate the review and approval process.

Best Practices

Clarify Expectations Early
Define goals, deliverables, and desired outcomes (e.g., publications, patents). Discuss timelines and decision-making processes to avoid misunderstandings.
Build Mutual Understanding
Acknowledge differences in academic and industry cultures. Establish shared language and expectations, and build trust through informal and formal engagement.
Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy
Discuss IP rights and publication expectations early. Include ORTIP in conversations when IP is involved.
Communication is Key
Set regular check-ins and use collaborative tools. Be transparent about delays or changes to maintain trust.
Reach Out Early and Often
Don’t wait until you have a full plan—ORTIP is available at any stage to help guide your collaboration and support your research goals.
Include the Right People
Ensure scientific leads, administrative contacts, and legal experts are involved. Define roles and revisit them as needed.
Navigating Internal Review – OSP
Before submitting to an industry partner, your proposal must be reviewed and approved by UNM’s Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP). They may request changes to align with university policies. OSP holds signature authority and will execute the agreement once all requirements are met.
Know the Boundaries
UNM cannot accept certain provisions (e.g., indemnification, unlimited liability, automatic IP ownership).

See UNM’s position on common contract terms.
Timeline Tip
Signature turnaround varies with agreement complexity—plan ahead!
Plan for Impact
Focus on real-world outcomes—products, processes, innovations. Celebrate success through joint publications or media releases.
Prepare for Change
If the scope, budget, or timeline changes, UNM will help you amend the agreement.
