Academic Publishing Costs

Academic publishing involves a range of costs associated with reviewing, editing, producing, hosting, and preserving scholarly research. Many institutions, across the country, are working to reduce barriers to publishing by negotiating transformative agreements with publishers, supporting open-access initiatives, and providing funding assistance for researchers.

This year, UNM Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher and HSC Vice President for Research Hengameh Raissy formed a committee tasked with evaluating recently updated policies related to academic publishes costs. Over the spring 2026 semester, the committee submitted a report with recommendations that UNM leaders are reviewing for both short-term and long-term solutions.
